Another Rwandan genocide suspect has died, according to a UN tribunal. He was one of the final five suspects remaining on the run. Phénéas Munyarugarama was killed in 2002 in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo according to the UN’s Residual Mechanism of International Criminal Tribunals.
“We hope this verdict gives some closure to the victims and survivors of Munyarugarama’s crimes in the Bugesera region,” the tribunal’s head prosecutor Serge Brammertz said in a statement.
Munyarugarama, a former Rwandan military commander, was charged with genocide and crimes against humanity on eight counts.
The new announcement comes after the tribunal confirmed the death of Protais Mpiranya, another highly sought suspect last week.
Ethnic Hutu extremists massacred over 800,000 people in Rwanda in only 100 days in 1994.
