President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the total number of COVID-19 cases in Kenya rose to 2,600 after 126 more patients tested positive.
President Kenyatta, addressing the nation at State House in Nairobi on Saturday, said the fatalities had also increased to 83 after 4 patients died from the disease.
Due to the rising number of infections and fatalities, the Head of State said, the government found it impractical to relax the restrictions currently in force aimed at combating the spread of the disease.
“Siaya has a 10-bed isolation facility… Busia county has a 34-bed isolation facility that was full 2 days ago…If there is a surge in infections in the counties, the health care system will be overwhelmed…Are Kenyans ready to nurse COVID-19 patients at home?” asked President Kenyatta.
Ban on all forms of social & political gatherings, bars, extended for 30 days as well as International travel restrictions have been extended. Ministry of Transport was however directed to within 7 days engage stakeholders and guide resumption of local air travel.
Following stakeholders’ consultation in the education sector,The President asked Ministry of Heath to jointly issue guidelines on a gradual return to normalcy in the education sector from September and Education Ministry to announce new school calendar by mid-August.
Nationwide dusk to dawn curfew has also been extended by 30 days from 9pm to 4am as a precautionary measure to control further spread of COVID-19.
President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the cessation of movement in Nairobi Metropolitan Area, Mombasa and Mandera for another 30 days.
