Candidates waiting to sit for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Kiharu constituency heaved a sigh of relief after they got revision books.

The area MP Ndindi Nyoro on Friday gave out revision books to go to all 4, 443 candidates waiting to sit for KCPE.

The revision book contains guiding questions and answers for five subject taught in primary education.

Ndindi said the books will assist children especially at grassroots who cannot afford gadgets to engage in online teaching.

He noted that a big number of the candidates from his constituency cannot access smart mobile phones, TV sets or radio to participate in learning streamed online.

“The books are a big reprieve to learners and their parents from this area as many of the pupils have not been engaging in studies after government closed down schools in March as a measure to control spread of covid-19,” he said,

The MP observed that education stakeholders have approved the content in the revision books, thus the candidates can revise with them before government announcement on when schools will be reopened.

“Here at grassroots, learners are finding it hard as they cannot have gadgets to learn online. Most of the time the pupils are engaged in domestic chores but not in studying,” he added.

The legislator said the books will only benefit candidates in public primary schools saying plans are underway to support those in secondary schools with learning materials.

“This is the first phase. In second phase we are working with local education stakeholders to give candidates waiting KCSE revision materials.” Ndindi further noted.

Speaking during the same occasion, Murang’a East Education Officer Mr. Richard Ng’ang’a said the books will benefit a lot as many learners were not engaged in online learning.

The sub county is typically in rural areas, thus not many parents could afford to have smart phones among other gadgets to facilitate online learning, noted Ng’ang’a.

He asked parents to follow up their children and ensure they take time to study as it’s not clear when the schools will be open.

“The threat of Covid -19 is still there and my appeal is to parents to ensure their children take time to learn. The parents and guardians can supervise them and ensure they use available learning materials to study,” he stated.

Headmistress of Murang’a technology primary school Ms Beatrace Wachira said they will ensure every candidate will get the revision book and offer the much needed guidance even if is through phone calls.

“We have to help our candidates by any means and ensure they are fully engaged in learning while at home. This will prepare them for exams even if they have taken much time at their homes,” noted Wachira.
