Authorities in Nyanza Region (RC) are calling for the depopulation of some islands in Lake Victoria as a step towards curbing the spread of coronavirus.
Nyanza Regional Commissioner, James Kianda, while speaking at the Migori Governor’s office, Wednesday, said they want Migingo, Remba and Mfang’ano Islands to have an optimum number of people who can manage social distance as a key step in controlling spread of coronavirus.
He urged fishermen to consider reducing activities at the Islands and resume their work after coronavirus will have been contained.
Kianda, however, expressed confidence on controlling the spread of Covid-19 if people, without being coerced by police, follow the directions given by the Government.
Controlling the spread of coronavirus should be everybody’s responsibility, a situation Kianda said should be embraced by every Kenyan.
The RC further assured the residents that the government has deployed enough security personnel along the borders to ensure nobody enters the country unnoticed. He said Kenya will protect her citizens against imported coronavirus cases while observing East African Cooperation protocols.
Kianda thanked the County Government of Migori for working closely with the National Government in making sure the residents stay safe.
Migori County Governor, Zachary Obado, thanked Nyumba Kumi and the residents at large for reporting cases coronavirus leading cases.
He said those breaking curfew or movement restriction have been reported by the concern residents.
Obado said they have 25 quarantine centers to deal with those who break curfew rules. He maintained that everyone must observe curfew rules failure to which they will be locked-up in quarantine centers.
The two leaders were speaking after a closed door meeting to discuss border security, especially how to prevent imported coronavirus cases. They agreed on tightening movement restrictions at the border and how to continue involving people in the fight.
