Transport CS James Macharia has disclosed upon finalization of the 95 per cent complete Nairobi Expressway, automobilists will be required to acquire a special toll payment card. All 27 payment booths are close to completion.

“There is a technology which they are bringing in, which will require drivers to have a card that they will load money and then they can use the expressway without stopping along to pay in cash.” he said

There will be 11 interchanges, the Eastern Bypass, the Southern Bypass, the SGR terminus at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport among others.

“We are almost there, the expressway is 95 percent complete and tests will start in March. As we speak now, most of the machinery that was being used to construct it has been moved to construct the Lang’ata Road which will eventually help with traffic,” the CS added.

Payments will depend on size of the vehicle and the distance covered motorists expected to pay charges between Ksh.100 and Ksh.1550.
