The National hygiene programme popularly known as ‘Kazi mtaani’ will enroll 55,000 youth in Nairobi County, Nairobi Regional Commissioner (RC) Wilson Njega has said.
Addressing the press in his office at Nyayo house on Wednesday, Njega said during the piloting phase one Nairobi County enrolled 12,000 youth distributed across five informal settlements. Some eight counties across the country, including Nairobi, were involved in initial phase.
“From Monday July 13, we begun phase two which has been expanded and in Nairobi we now have a total number of 55, 000 personnel that is 53, 000 youth and 1,791 supervisors from the National Youth Service (NYS) and youth champions. The increased number is due to the high rate of unemployed youth in the informal settlements,” said Njega.
The RC explained that in first phase they were engaged in improving the hygiene and improving the environment in the informal settlements including garbage collection, bush clearing, unclogging of the drainages among others but in second phase new acticities have been brought in.
“We are going to have the beautification of the city which we can all see happening along the city corridors and walkways, we will also move to Uhuru Park and other open areas, access roads and other public facilities to give them a face lift,” explained the RC.
Njega added that the programme will be for a period of six months to cushion the youth from the effects of the coronavirus.
