The Kirinyaga Kanu branch has launched a digital membership recruitment drive targeting the youth above 18 years.

Through this ambitious initiative, the independence party seeks to involve the youth in its day to day affairs as top officials prepare to hand over the button to the younger generation.

Speaking during the launch at Kagio town, the branch chairman Ngure Gathungu said the party was rejuvenating itself in the area in readiness for the 2022 general elections.

Gathungu said as the general elections approach, the youth must be prepared in advance to vie for the various elective positions on the party ticket.

“Kanu will field candidates in all the elective seats come the general elections right from the president to the MCA, hence the urgent need for us to revitalize the party from this moment in order to counter the stiff competition posed by other contesting parties,” he said.

The chairman said unlike in the past general elections where certain parties formed coalitions and fielded candidates, this time round Kanu will go it alone to select its torch bearers.

Accompanied by other branch officials Wachira Karuri (secretary) John Munene (Treasurer) and Moses Waweru (organizing Secretary) among others, Gathungu said the digital registration of members had proved efficient since the applicants were only required to use their mobile phone device.

“We have sent out our registration codes and since most Kenyans have mobile phones, this has proved to be the most efficient method to recruit members since it is not time wasting and also non-interactive especially during this coronavirus pandemic,” noted Gathungu.

The branch official said there was no doubt the party national chairman Gideon Moi will be the Kanu presidential flag bearer and he would soon embark on countrywide membership drive.
