Kenya Kwanza Alliance access to the Nyayo National Stadium, where the alliance wanted to conduct its last rally before the General Election has been denied.
The stadium’s manager, Sports Kenya, said in a statement that a different peace concert had previously been scheduled there. The concert was scheduled between August 5 and August 7, 2022.
“We regret to inform you that due to peace concerts scheduled to take place at both Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium between August 5 and August 7, 2022, the facility will not be available for your use. Kindly be informed,” statement addressed to UDA Secretary General, Veronica Maina, read.
UDA requested the venue in writing to the Ministry of Sports on June 7 and on July 12 it made a Ksh1.5 million payment.
Raila Odinga, Azimio la Umoja alliance presidential candidate, has also submitted an application to hold a demonstration at the same location on August 6 labeled as the biggest rally on the final day of campaigning.
Both Raila and Ruto have previously used the sports complex for events. While Ruto met with the Kenya Kwanza women’s guild and had prayers at the stadium, Azimio unveiled its manifesto.
Despite having a capacity of 60,000, Kasarani Stadium is chosen by most politicians over Nyayo (45,000) because of its location in the capital.
