Students are organising a demonstration this morning in favor of suspended vice chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina as a result of the Kenyatta University controversy.
“We’ve mobilized students and we’ll be at the main gate today at 11.00 am,” Moses Ngigi, the Kenyatta University Students Association (Kusa) president told Nation
He added that students opposed the government’s plans to divide the university’s property for the WHO logistics center (30 acres), the Africa Center for Disease Control (10 acres), KUTRRH (180 acres), and the resettling of Kamae Settlement Scheme squatters (190 acres).
“They’re planning to sack Prof Wainaina and excise the land. We want our VC back and KU land will not be taken away,” Mr Ngigi said.
It is also expected that a new team will take over operating the university later today after the removal of the university council.
Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina told the media last week that the proposal to provide property to WHO was not in the university’s best interests because no discussions were conducted and they were not involved.
Without citing any names, Mr. Kenyatta claimed that certain people do not consider the interests of the country while making decisions. He advised such managers to straighten up and get ready to retire with him when his term as president ends in a month.
The Kenyan government has pledged $5 million (Sh600 million) and 12.4 hectares for the construction of the WHO Emergency Hub, which will be completed in three years.
