On Thursday, a segment of matatu operators shut Waiyaki Way in Nairobi in protest causing considerable traffic congestion.  To disperse the mob that had assembled at Westlands roundabout, police and GSU officers were forced to use teargas.

The matatu crew was demonstrating against the recent closure of a bus stop at the Westlands roundabout.

Following the interruptions, commuters trapped in early morning traffic were forced to walk lengthy distances to their destination.  Police recommended they use alternate routes after videos and images showed furious motorists and passengers trapped on one of the city’s main highways.
