The state looks to set up a retirement home program for the country’s military veterans if a bill before parliament becomes a law
Once the proposed law is passed, the Defence Council would come up with a criterion to determine who lives in the retirement home and services to be offered.
The Military Veterans Bill, 2022 sponsored by National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya, aims to establish a structure recognising the sacrifices and service of veterans.
The Bill will provide a Dependant’s Education Fund and other policies regarding military veterans aimed at ensuring the smooth and seamless transition of military veterans from military service to civilian life.
“The Defence Council shall establish a fund to be known as the Dependents’ Education Fund to provide scholarships for the education of the children of members of the Kenya Defence Forces and military veterans and deceased members of KDF or deceased military veterans,” says the bill.
The Defence Council will have Defence Cabinet Secretary, who is the chairperson, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, Navy and Army commanders, the Air Force, and the Defence Principal Secretary.
The Bill farther provides counselling and treatment for work-related stress for the retired veterans. They would also acquire physical rehabilitation for any affliction from serving in the military.
They would also acquire an education and training to develop new skills. Individuals dishonorably discharged from the military will not qualify.
