Deputy President William Ruto has stated that Kenyans should not be charged for accessing the Nairobi Expressways and has pledged to do so if he is elected on August 9.

On Thursday, July 7, Ruto said that Kenyans are already suffering as a result of the spiraling debt and labor costs in an interview with KTN News.

Ruto, Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate, stated that despite the country’s high cost of living, Kenyans shouldn’t have to endure any more hardship.

The Nairobi Expressway, which connects Mlolongo and Westlands, has toll booths installed where motorists must pay for each trip they take in order to pay off debts to contractors.
Deputy President Ruto claimed that such a plan unfairly burdens Kenyans who are already struggling with taxes.

“Taxation will be taken to products, not highways. People will pay for products that are transported by road but not for using it,” he stated.

The Kenya Kwanza alliance leader declared his government will enusure maximum number of motorists access the 27 kilometers highway.

Each driver must pay a charge to use the expressway, which ranges from Ksh100 to Ksh360 depending on the distance traveled.
