Secondary school student killed while digging in Bureti

A secondary school student died when a hole from which she was digging out soil caved in at Kusumek village in Bureti sub-county ofKericho on Thursday.

Confirming the Thursday incident, Bureti sub-county police commander Felician Nafula said the deceased identified as Sharon Chepngeno, aged 18 years, was reportedly inside the hole with her sister Faith Chebet.

Nafula said at the time of the incident the girls’ three younger siblings were also present but were at the edges of the hole where they were collecting the dugout soil meant to plaster their parents’ house.

She said members of the public heard the screams of the minors and on rushing to the scene found the walls of the pit having collapsed burying the two alive.

Police officers and members of the public retrieved the two teenagers who were rushed to AIC Litein hospital where the deceased succumbed to her injuries while Chebet was taken to Kapkatet sub-county hospital for specialized treatment.

Chebet, a Form Two student at Laboso Girls Secondary School was further referred to Kapkatet sub-county hospital where she is admitted in a fair condition with injuries on both legs,” said Nafula.

The body of the deceased who was a student at Saset Girls Secondary school,  Bomet sub-county is lying at AIC Litein mission hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the occurrence.
