Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has called for investigations after two students commmited suicide after failing to graduate.
Two of the three students were enrolled at the school, the university revealed in a statement dated Friday, July 1. The two were studying strategic management and BSc business computing.
However, they denied rumors that the two committed suicide after failing to graduate and they encouraged the police to provide a preliminary report while their inquiries were ongoing.
JKUAT asserted that its own inquiry proved the academic records of the pair were accurate.
“According to the police report, their bodies were found in their respective hostels outside JKUAT. We convey our condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the deceased,” the university’s statement read.
Although the administration denied any involvement with the third student’s death who was believed to have been related to the school.
‘We wish to clarify that the third person who is also said to have died by suicide in Kiambu County, is not a JKUAT student,’ part of the statement read.
“We are committed to the wellbeing of our students. This extends to providing comprehensive mental health services through in-house University counsellors and organizing students’ initiatives within and without the university.
The institution’s announcement came days after the police began looking into the alleged suicide, which friends and eyewitnesses said was motivated by frustration from the deceased poor academic progress.
One of the students left behind a suicide note that will help and add to the ongoing investigations.
