The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) conflict peace talks have finally made strides after the rebel group M23 agreed to withdraw, giving former president Uhuru Kenyatta his first victory in the mediations. The rebel group declared its readiness to leave the country’s eastern provinces.
“The M23 Movement confirms its maintenance of the ceasefire. Regarding the implementation of the said recommendations, the M23 is ready to start disengagement and withdraw, even though it was not represented in the said summit,” read the statement in part
The former president’s efforts to bring about peace in the DRC ran into a number of challenges three months into the process, but the M23 statement may be considered as a huge step in the right direction.
Uncertain reasons led to the cancellation of a previous meeting in Nairobi when Joo Lourenço, the president of Angola, took charge of the Luanda Process in his nation the same week.
But a week later, the Nairobi Process was revived, with Uhuru serving as the mediator in Nairobi.
Former President Uhuru accusations that the Nairobi Process organizers had neglected to pay allowances and care for the delegates presented another obstacle.
