Nominations for Starehe, Kamukunji, and Embakasi East, which were scheduled for Wednesday, have been canceled by the UDA.
The National Elections Board declared on Tuesday that the party will choose popular candidates based on opinion polls.
“The board confirms that under UDA’s universal suffrage system, there will be no nominations for the Embakasi East and Kamkunji constituencies.” Instead, alternative means outlined in the party constitution shall be used,” stated Anthony Mwaura, board chairperson.
Last week’s nominations in Starehe and Kamukunji were canceled due to violence.
Supporters of Starehe MP Charles Njagua and his opponent, East African Legislative Assembly MP Simon Mbugua, are alleged to have clashed, causing the exercise to be postponed.
Mwaura stated that the party had started an investigation into the incidents.
Any candidate who is proven to be guilty will be held responsible.
Both Njagua and Mbugua, according to Mwaura, agreed to employ opinion polls and signed a promise to accept the polls’ results, which was witnessed by UDA secretary general Veronica Maina and Mwaura.
The planned combined nominations with ANC, an affiliate party in the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, in Mathare and Dagoretti North have also been halted by Deputy President William Ruto’s party.
As previously stated, there will be no universal suffrage nominations among the coalition partners.
“The National Elections Board wishes to inform the public that, following negotiations between the UDA and the ANC, no joint nominations would be made.”
