IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati

Wafula Chebukati, the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, has scheduled a crisis meeting for Tuesday to consider the running mate deadline.

After both the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza coalitions contested the Thursday deadline, the commission decided to call the meeting.

“We have asked officials leading the presidential teams of all candidates to come to the meeting so that we can agree on this matter,” a commissioner said.

Azimio was contemplating the prospect of bringing a lawsuit to overturn the IEBC deadline when they met.

Should IBEC insist on naming the running mate by Thursday, Deputy President William Ruto’s team is brainstorming on how to proceed.

Both the Ruto and Raila campaigns had protested to the April 28 deadline, requesting that the names be submitted to the IEBC between May 29 and June 6.

After arguing that a precedent was created in 2017, the commission is anticipated to explain why the April 28 deadline must stand.

Raila will attend President Uhuru Kenyatta’s state funeral for Kibaki on Friday at Nyayo Stadium, where President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead the nation in paying Kibaki his final respects before his burial on Saturday.

While there are speculations that Raila has yet to choose his deputy, some well-known figures from Kenyatta’s Mt Kenya region have surfaced.
