Deputy President-elect Rigathi Gachagua

On Wednesday, August 17, deputy president-elect Rigathi Gachagua said that President Uhuru Kenyatta had been misled by his close associates into believing that Azimio was poised to win the election for president on August 9.

Gachagua, in an interview with Kass FM, asserted that Uhuru’s associates coerced local chiefs in order to manipulate the statistics that were used to demonstrate Azimio coalition had the support of the local population.

The DP-elect claims that the fabricated data ultimately contributed to Azimio’s defeat, with Kenyans casting their ballots in opposition to the existing government.

The former MP for Mathira added that members of the Azimio team had contacted him in an effort to reaffirm the handshake agreement between the two groups, which he turned down.

Gachagua alleged that Azimio coalition is trying to figure out why its leader, Raila Odinga, failed to gather the necessary number of supporters in the Mt. Kenya region.

“If Raila wants to have tea with the president-elect, he is welcome to do so. He is a Kenyan, and we will ensure that his transport, medical and other needs are catered for,” he stated.

Gachagua asserted that exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna was unfairly punished for resisting the present government, making a reference to the possibility of his return.

“Miguna should start packing his bags because he did not do any wrong. It’s because he differed with a few leaders and hence was shown the door. Wherever he is, I’d tell him to be patient and as soon as the president-elect is sworn in, he should book a flight,” Mr Gachagua stated.
