Isiolo youth hired by the government to improve the environment through ‘Kazi Mtaani’ have started the work smoothly under the supervision of the National Youth Service (NYS) supervisors.
While addressing some of the Kazi Mtaani youth who were recruited recently at the Isiolo police grounds on Monday, Isiolo County Commissioner Herman Shambi said the beneficiaries would be engaged in cleaning public areas, garbage collection, clearing bushes and roads damaged by rain water run offs.
He added that the needy persons were identified through merit in their respective wards as the president had ordered.
“There is also a beautification component involving trees and flower planting, painting facilities, and paving cycle lanes which will be done in the stipulated programme period,” the CC added.
The CC was accompanied by some members of Kazi Mtaani County Implementation committee members, who included a Senior Administrative Officer Annabel Gitonga
Gitonga said registration of the enlisted youth has been slow owing to sluggish internet speed, adding that about 99 per cent of the recruits have been registered so far.
She added that 3,479 youth mainly drawn from slums and those from poor backgrounds are distributed across the County and supervised by 116 NYS officers.
She said all payments will be done through M-pesa being a way of ensuring the payees do not crowd and endanger lives from the coronavirus threat.
One of the recruits, Adan Osman, from Burat Ward lauded the government saying the hiring of the Youth was corruption-free as the enlistment was done fairly through the Nyumba Kumi strategy.
“We thank the government for supporting us in the six and half months’ casual employment since most of us had been suffering from the negative social and economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country,” Osman said.
Many recruits welcomed the government’s National Hygiene initiative as it would cushion them against the economic challenges presented by the Covid-19 Virus outbreak from which a number of citizens had lost employment due to dwindling economic activities.
The government will spend over Sh10 billion on about 200,000 youth countrywide.
