Donatha Chali, the Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander, claimed the bus driver approached the bridge aggressively and disregarded warnings warning drivers to slow down.
She also made note of the bridge’s reputation as a death trap where many people have perished in the past. According to media sources, the bus’ brakes failed, forcing it to crash through the guardrails and plunging into River Nithi.
Witnesses at the spot confirmed the police statement, stating that the unfortunate bus was traveling at high speed when it hit the guard rail.
