Residents of Teso North Sub County have hailed the government for ensuring that trucks that have been blocking the exit point from Malaba border to Uganda is opened.
Locals interviewed by KNA said that the four days snarl up of long distance trucks had impacted negatively on their lives.
According to John Buluma, a carpenter at Kocholya Centre, the initiative by the government has helped in easing congestion along the road and reducing the chances of spreading COVID 19.
“They have been moving to the shops and markets as they purchase items and it is not easy to know who is corona positive,” he said.
John Opiat a boda boda rider within the Sub County said that the pile up of lories made them spend more time on the road hence risking their lives as they maneuver their ways within the crowded space.
“I want to urge truck drivers not to block the road because such a move affect all transporters,” he said.
Meshack Barasa from Okuleum village lamented that the drivers have been interacting freely with the locals including children creating fear of the spread of coronavirus.
Cecilia Akware on her part sympathised with the truck drivers stating that some of them have stayed hungry since the incident began.
Kizito Omuse from Okileu village also appreciated the government initiative adding that some of the truck drivers posed danger to the environment through open defecation.
Yesterday, a team of Security officers led by Deputy Inspector General Noor Gabow used government machinery to ensure that the more than 40 kilometer traffic snarl up from Malaba border occasioned by a section of truck drivers is cleared.
The team is still at Malaba border post to ensure free movement of vehicles along the busy Northern corridor road.
